The number of U.S. troops going AWOL and suffering from PTSD is rising. October 1, 2007

The Pentagon has estimated that since the start of the current conflict in Iraq, more than 5,500 U.S. military personnel have deserted. Some websites are claiming that the number is more like 10,000!
What’s more, about 35 percent of Iraq veterans have sought treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder within a year of coming home from deployment. And, between 1999 and 2004, the number of veterans seeking benefits for PTSD increased 79%. (United States Department of Defense). What concerns me is that these numbers may not even reflect those who are dealing with PTSD and are not seeking treatment.
PBS did a wonderful documentary on this topic. Check out this video and then see the whole episode for free at http://www.pbs.org/now

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says that if President Bush was ever to visit the Islamic Republic, he would be invited to make a speech at a university there. This comes after Ahmadinejad himself made an appearance at Columbia University.
What do you think? Would it be right for Bush to take him up on this offer? What are your lasting impressions of Ahmadinejad’s U.S. visit?
