Simply Millennial is back!

After six months of experiencing some chaotic soul-searching, I’m again ready to step up on the soapbox, clear my throat, and spew my brand of verbal vomit!

In just over a week from now, I’ll be leaving my beloved San Luis Obispo, CA, and heading to the place of my birth – Florida. Or like some choose to call it, “The last place you go before heaven.”  After I spend some much-needed time hanging out with my Pops and our extended crazy Cuban relatives, I’ll be on my way up the Eastern Seaboard for the rest of the summer.

Sprinkled in-between all the travel blogging, I’m sure I’ll be interjecting thoughts about life in general.

Stay tuned and wish me luck! (The comments link is located just under the title of each post).

Between hosting house guests, attending parties, and cooking entrees and side dishes galore, I am EXHAUSTED! This weekend I made one attempt to blog, and it was quickly squashed by the invite to a sushi dinner.  I couldn’t pass that up!

So much happened from Thursday to Sunday, the events rendered my eyes unable to blink!  Alas, I am swinging back into the blogging world. Oh, how I’ve missed it!

I apologize to my faithful readers for not blogging these past couple of days. As most of you know, Thursday was the “Day of Tori.”

Have you ever been so excited and focused on something that your brain kind of just shuts down?  I remember being 12 and not being able to sleep the night before going to Disneyland.  The same feeling returned yesterday.

I feel so strange now. It’s a mix between emotional nostalgia and the “crash” one might get after too much sugar or caffeine.

Forgive me, I need a day to refocus my blogging energy.  Stay tuned for the concert review!

FINALLY SEEING TORI AMOS LIVE IN CONCERT!

This Thursday I’m off to Santa Barbara, with excellent tickets in hand, to see one of the most moving and intelligent musicians of our time. Stay tuned later this week for my review of the show!

Over the past month I have been absent from the blogging and print world because I thought I would try to be in solidarity with the writer’s who are on strike. Then I realized that I could not give up my First Amendment freedom so easily. As a species, we must have creativity simply because our intended purpose is just that – to create. We use creativity to think of ways of dealing with problems, and to form ideas in the mind of things never seen or experienced directly.

I decided that these writers who are on strike are looking outside of themselves for happiness. Money should not be what they strive for. They should strive for expressing and creating the newness of the world through their art. It is up to them to make the rest of us see the world in a different way. What would Jack Kerouac, Langston Hughes, or Henry David Thoreau have to say about all of this? We seem to have become controlled by that which is outside of ourselves, primarily money.

I believe that money and big business are taking over the artist spheres of our culture. Let’s face it, the music industry as been devoid of quality for a loooong time. Instead, it has been replaced with cheap, manufactured variations of a special formula. With a few exceptions, dance and music have become replaced with stripping and a rhythm that enhances the stripping.

Fashion is a form of art and creativity. Yet, fashion magazines and other advertising have caused most of us to be pretty unhappy with ourselves. We try to make our bodies and faces become a size or a shape that is genetically impossible, and we come out looking like stretched cat faces with hanging chicken necks.

Our literary world seems a bit robotic as well. Oprah Winfrey has to tell us what to read. And just as starkly as a World War II soup kitchen, Harry Potter serves as today’s mere rationing of creative thought. There are so many undiscovered fiction writers who never get read because they don’t fit into a commercial mold. Actually, the one piece of literature that has quite a bit of fictitious merit is the Bible, and even that has been ruined. It’s an example of phenomenal storytelling, but it’s being passed off as reality to control the masses. The more people who think the same way, the more votes they can align.

We have such a fascination with money, that even though the majority of Americans are debt rich and income poor, we still cast votes that support the wealthy getting wealthier. We shop at Wal-Mart, eat Toll House and Nabisco, wear Abercrombie and Bitch, and drive cars that were made somewhere far, far away. Dare we make our own clothes, bake our own crackers, or develop our own means of transportation. This is not true evolution because no one really stands out as a leader of the species – instead we willingly give up the ability to pass on our own special genes, in order to adopt the group identity. A lack of diversity in any population makes it vulnerable to extinction.

You are meant to create. Be selfless with it or you’re nothing but a mere mortal.

It may be after Labor Day weekend, but I’m going to THE beach!

I won’t be posting much this weekend, as I’ll be back in Virginia for my mother’s wedding. It should be lots of fun. A plane of Cubans will be arriving Friday afternoon, so surely this will provide lots of entertainment for the weekend.

If you’ll be in the area, give me a call!

Like every generation before us, Millennials are coming into their own and defining themselves as a “niche” population of this world. Some of the stereotypes that have been attached to our age group aren’t so positive, while others prove that we are an important demographic to pay attention to for a glimpse into the future. We may have short attention spans, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have profound thoughts!

At times my opinions might be strong, or maybe they will  seem completely irrelevant.  But that’s what you should expect, because I’m a millennial! I will be posting a range of comments about politics, entertainment, philosophy and more. What I hope for the most is that everyone adds their comments and engages in polite, honest, and fair discussion. And opinions are not limited to Millennials – I invite members of every generation to add their two cents, or more!

I hope you join me on the day by day journey of uncovering the simple characteristics that make up a very complicated whole. Below is a video trailer for “GenNext,” a one-hour documentary that aired on PBS about this topic. Check out more at: www.generation-next.tv
