The wretchedness that is patchouli oil June 19, 2008

I would just like to take a moment to discuss how much patchouli oil makes me want to vomit.

The scent of the oil itself isn’t so bad, but when it’s mixed in with days of stank body odor and sweat, I begin to feel my stomach turn upside down. Linnea’s Cafe (a quirky downtown San Luis Obispo coffee shop with lots of character) has always been a great place for me to do my writing. But as I sit here now, I am overcome with the scent of patchouli and B.O. What makes this time so especially awful is the fact that it’s a hot day. GAG ME!

What’s up with not taking a quick shower anyway? Okay, so you want to conserve water – then at least jump in the ocean!!

I am well aware that I’m a little late with jumping onto this book’s bandwagon, but I have to express my appreciation for it nonetheless.

I received this book about a month ago, but was hesitant to start reading it. I guess I didn’t want to feel like a groupie, which is ridiculous because I’m a fiend for everything pop culture anyway. Or maybe I was afraid of the word “pray.” Whatever the cause of my resistance, when I did decide to crack the book open I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

For those who haven’t read it yet, it is the true memoir of Elizabeth Gilbert’s travels through Italy, India and Indonesia in search of, well, everything! She’s just getting out of a nasty divorce, and begins a journey to reconnect with herself, all while enjoying the world’s pleasures.

For me, the timing in receiving this book was so incredibly synchronous with my own personal journey. I too am transitioning out of a long relationship and headed for an itinerary of adventure. Reading Ms. Gilbert’s story has been so soothing to me. Her sense of humor is both infectious and intelligent. I feel much stronger spiritually, and therefore more ready to take on what the next few months will bring.

Even if you aren’t currently going through an emotional time in your life, I still would recommend that every woman read this book. It’s like a good kick in the arse!

Yesterday, I went to the post office to ship off four boxes of stuff to the East Coast. All four boxes were exactly the same size. Three of the four contained books, DVDs, and CDs and were classified as “Media Mail.” The last box was full of random things, so I mailed it as “Parcel Post.”

Still with me? Good, cuz’ this is where it gets real loopy.

The “Media Mail” boxes each weighed approximately 35 pounds. Therefore, each box cost around $15 to ship. The “Parcel Post” box, only coming in at 15 pounds, cost me $25! Basically, I paid almost as much for one box of 15 pounds as I did for 2 boxes of 70 pounds.

They didn’t even look into the contents of each package! How did they know for sure there were books in there? I should have just told them all of the boxes were full of media.

UGH!!

Simply Millennial is back!

After six months of experiencing some chaotic soul-searching, I’m again ready to step up on the soapbox, clear my throat, and spew my brand of verbal vomit!

In just over a week from now, I’ll be leaving my beloved San Luis Obispo, CA, and heading to the place of my birth – Florida. Or like some choose to call it, “The last place you go before heaven.”  After I spend some much-needed time hanging out with my Pops and our extended crazy Cuban relatives, I’ll be on my way up the Eastern Seaboard for the rest of the summer.

Sprinkled in-between all the travel blogging, I’m sure I’ll be interjecting thoughts about life in general.

Stay tuned and wish me luck! (The comments link is located just under the title of each post).
