As an extension of the previous post, and because I think it’s  a good way to assess your health, I’ve decided to join Oprah’s bandwagon to promote RealAge.com.If you take a little time, maybe about 15 minutes to create a profile and answer the survey questions, you will get to find out how old you really are.I am biologically 26.3 years old, but my real age is 30.4 !  The assessment told me I need to change a few habits to bring down some years, and actually gave me good advice on how to do it.Take it for yourself at realage.com, and BE HONEST WHEN YOU ANSWER THE QUESTIONS! The results might shock you, but knowledge about your health is the best way you can improve it.

This video of the Spice Girls in 1997 on the Clive James Show is really funny! I got such a kick out of it. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years!   Now is also a good opportunity to go find a picture of yourself from 10 years ago. How much have you changed?

How are we going to pay for this!? November 29, 2007

Immigration over the past seven years was the highest for any seven-year period in U.S. history, bringing 10.3 million new immigrants, more than half of them without legal status, according to an analysis of census data released by the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington.

How is our system going to pay for social services for these illegals? We can’t even afford to build levees or new bridges, or even fund the senseless war!

If you haven’t heard the sounds of Canada’s newest band, The Gossip, then you should definetely tune your ears. The lead singer, Beth Ditto, has a voice that will knock your socks off. She’s probably 300 pounds, but her voice is nothing but grounded.

The other day I was listening to their latest CD, Standing in the Way of Control, and I couldn’t help but realize the likeness to Pat Benatar’s sound.  And then I thought about Justin Timberlake and how he is very reminiscent of Micheal Jackson. There are other artists who seem to be modern versions of artists who’ve come before.

So, I ask, is this an example of history repeating itself? Is it true that what’s old becomes new again? Do you ever wonder if a unique musical sound is left out there in the universe?

quest.gifHaving been inspired by Alexander McCall Smith’s series of books, The Sunday Philosophy Club, I’ve decided to start a new blog series that raises moral and ethical questions to you, the readers. I’m hoping for diverse answers from all of you, so don’t hold back!

SITUATION:

Mr. and Mrs. Z have given birth to their first child, who has been born with a permanent genetic illness. Mr. and Mrs. Z would like to have more children, but figure it is a good idea to get prenatal screenings to see what the chances are of producing another child with this illness. It is discovered that in order for the illness to be present in the offspring, BOTH parents must carry the gene. It is also determined that Mrs. Z is a carrier, but Mr. Z is not! This deduces that the father of the child is another man.

QUESTION:

How should the doctor or medical facility break the news? Should only Mrs. Z be told, and then left to inform her husband? Or is it the doctor’s responsibility to maintain the professional relationship he has with Mr. Z and tell him the news?

Black-American men – Who are you, really? November 27, 2007

If you haven’t heard yet, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams is running a VERY interesting series this week profiling Black-American women. Each night this week, the last 5 minutes of the show will be dedicated to discussing different topics associated with this demographic. Monday night’s show talked about Black-American women in business. The statistics given were both encouraging and insightful. 75% of businesses started by blacks in the last year were by women, and seven black women to every 1 black male have obtained a college degree in this country.     But what does this say about our Black-American men?  The gender gap in the black community is wide. What is to blame? One theory I have is what I call the “50 Cent Mentality.” Our society may be feeding young black men the message that a college education isn’t needed, and that real power is to be the resident gangster on the block.     Incidentally, I saw another program this evening on PBS about home-grown terrorism, and the infiltration of Islam into the Southern black community. Apparently, many Southern jails are harboring large populations of convicts who have converted to Islam as a means toward personal reformation. Like the radical jihadists of the Middle East, I believe the target recruitment demographic lies in young men with no direction, and who want to feel like they are a part of something bigger. Perhaps our society has pushed Black-American men to the fringes of our society, therefore making them more likely to join a cause that gives them a sense of power they may not ever experience otherwise.      Whose responsibility is it to make sure our citizens don’t fall down the cracks, or worse yet, turn their backs on us? Will these men find it within themselves to overcome the pressure of who society tells them they should be? Is it up to the widely successful Black-American female to support their brothers? Or does our government need to make changes to level the playing field?

Over the past month I have been absent from the blogging and print world because I thought I would try to be in solidarity with the writer’s who are on strike. Then I realized that I could not give up my First Amendment freedom so easily. As a species, we must have creativity simply because our intended purpose is just that – to create. We use creativity to think of ways of dealing with problems, and to form ideas in the mind of things never seen or experienced directly.

I decided that these writers who are on strike are looking outside of themselves for happiness. Money should not be what they strive for. They should strive for expressing and creating the newness of the world through their art. It is up to them to make the rest of us see the world in a different way. What would Jack Kerouac, Langston Hughes, or Henry David Thoreau have to say about all of this? We seem to have become controlled by that which is outside of ourselves, primarily money.

I believe that money and big business are taking over the artist spheres of our culture. Let’s face it, the music industry as been devoid of quality for a loooong time. Instead, it has been replaced with cheap, manufactured variations of a special formula. With a few exceptions, dance and music have become replaced with stripping and a rhythm that enhances the stripping.

Fashion is a form of art and creativity. Yet, fashion magazines and other advertising have caused most of us to be pretty unhappy with ourselves. We try to make our bodies and faces become a size or a shape that is genetically impossible, and we come out looking like stretched cat faces with hanging chicken necks.

Our literary world seems a bit robotic as well. Oprah Winfrey has to tell us what to read. And just as starkly as a World War II soup kitchen, Harry Potter serves as today’s mere rationing of creative thought. There are so many undiscovered fiction writers who never get read because they don’t fit into a commercial mold. Actually, the one piece of literature that has quite a bit of fictitious merit is the Bible, and even that has been ruined. It’s an example of phenomenal storytelling, but it’s being passed off as reality to control the masses. The more people who think the same way, the more votes they can align.

We have such a fascination with money, that even though the majority of Americans are debt rich and income poor, we still cast votes that support the wealthy getting wealthier. We shop at Wal-Mart, eat Toll House and Nabisco, wear Abercrombie and Bitch, and drive cars that were made somewhere far, far away. Dare we make our own clothes, bake our own crackers, or develop our own means of transportation. This is not true evolution because no one really stands out as a leader of the species – instead we willingly give up the ability to pass on our own special genes, in order to adopt the group identity. A lack of diversity in any population makes it vulnerable to extinction.

You are meant to create. Be selfless with it or you’re nothing but a mere mortal.
