For those of you who travel frequently, and spend long layovers in airports, you know that good reading material is essential. With all the traveling I have done this year, I regret to say that I’ve spent many mindless hours perusing the overpriced bookstores in various airports. I usually take my own novel, or biography to read, but sometimes a weary traveler needs more visually appealing literature. The solution is, of course, magazine publications.

I have a hard time plopping down over one dollar for any of those ridiculous gossip mags, but am very willing to pay up to $5.00 for good lifestlye publications. I was a big fan of O MAGAZINE, but really didn’t feel like I was getting my money’s worth. Don’t get me wrong, I love Oprah, but the magazine’s audience isn’t really directed to me. Instead, I have found a work of art in the magazine entitled, REAL SIMPLE.

I love this mag so much, so I’m subscribing to it. This month’s issue is all about clutter control. As a typical Virgo, this is like the holy grail to my personality type. The usual lifestyle topics like Beauty, Style, Recipes and Health are incorporated into each issue, but they are covered in a very unique way – they actually cater to REAL people!!

My favorite section is called “Simple Solutions.” Last month I learned that you can use lemon juice and a cotton swab to correct uneven tanning lotion lines! In general, I think of the content in this magazine as, “Modern Day Grandma.”

Ahmadinejad invites Bush to speak at Iranian university! September 29, 2007

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says that if President Bush was ever to visit the Islamic Republic, he would be invited to make a speech at a university there. This comes after Ahmadinejad himself made an appearance at Columbia University.

What do you think? Would it be right for Bush to take him up on this offer? What are your lasting impressions of Ahmadinejad’s U.S. visit?

Movie Review of “Candy” (Abbie Cornish, Heath Ledger) September 28, 2007

candy-cover.jpg      “Candy” is not for the sweet-toothed.

Last night I indulged in quite a few my own personal addictions. I enjoyed a strawberry frozen yogurt(complete wtih oreo and graham cracker toppings), poured myself a tall glass of wine, and then excitedly sat down to watch my favorite love of all – a late-night movie. This time around I watched “Candy” (2006).

I love Heath Ledger. I really do. There’s something about the dirty, long hair, drug addict chic that unexplainably attracts me to him. In this film, he is captivated by an uncorrupted artist gal named Candy. The film starts at the climax of their relationship, which solely seems based on heroin-induced love fests. (Might I say that Abbie Cornish has really nice boobs). The story predictably unfolds into a hellish escapade that is facilitated by an Organic Chemistry professor(a functioning heroin addict) played by the phenomenal Geoffrey Rush.

There are some parallels to  “Requiem for a Dream,” but without the really grim and disgusting visual effects and with more focus on the emotional consequences of drug abuse. There are even moments of quality dark humor, although the overall tone is slow and heartbreaking.

I never thought I’d see a sad movie come out of Australia, but this one is a wonderful effort.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 popcorn tubs!

Fag-Hags: Why the negative connotation? September 27, 2007

As a self-proclaimed Fag-Hag, I am proud to state that being a member of this club can be one of the most rewarding life experiences. That being said, I’ve never understood the negative connotation the name brings. I mean, as long as you’re not fooling yourself into believing that you can change a man’s orientation, or convince him to be your “psuedo-husband,” I think this relationship is healthy and beautiful. I will admit, however, that when I was in my prime of fag-hagdom I did not have normal or stable heterosexual relationships. Bringing my boys out with me was like lugging around a chastity belt. Even some girlfriends of mine would be uncomfortable when I traveled with the pack. Why the negative connotation, and is it changing?

Here are some of my favorite Fag-Hags:

Welcome to Simply Millennial! September 26, 2007

Like every generation before us, Millennials are coming into their own and defining themselves as a “niche” population of this world. Some of the stereotypes that have been attached to our age group aren’t so positive, while others prove that we are an important demographic to pay attention to for a glimpse into the future. We may have short attention spans, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have profound thoughts!

At times my opinions might be strong, or maybe they will  seem completely irrelevant.  But that’s what you should expect, because I’m a millennial! I will be posting a range of comments about politics, entertainment, philosophy and more. What I hope for the most is that everyone adds their comments and engages in polite, honest, and fair discussion. And opinions are not limited to Millennials – I invite members of every generation to add their two cents, or more!

I hope you join me on the day by day journey of uncovering the simple characteristics that make up a very complicated whole. Below is a video trailer for “GenNext,” a one-hour documentary that aired on PBS about this topic. Check out more at: www.generation-next.tv
